MEMORANDUM

Subject: Recognizing July 22, 2019 as "World Brain Day" in Pennsylvania

Most of us have experienced the pain that a headache can bring for a brief period of time. For most, it is mildly inconvenient and uncomfortable, but often subsides shortly after its onset. However, for the 36 million Americans, young and old, suffering from migraine, the pain is an unfortunate reality, hindering them from going to work, playing with their children, or making it through an entire school day without interruptions.

Migraine is considered to be the third most common disease worldwide, with an incidence greater than diabetes, epilepsy and asthma combined. Yet migraine receives less attention, awareness efforts and research than any other burdensome disease. Further, children are not spared from the detriments of migraine, despite the misinformation that migraine is a condition that targets adults, as 1 in 8 children are reported to struggle with the condition. As a result, migraine is under-recognized, under-diagnosed and under-treated, leaving millions feeling alone, frustrated and out of control of their own physical and mental health.

This year, the World Federation of Neurology and the International Headache Society has partnered to host the fifth annual “World Brain Day”, held on July 22 of each year. This day serves as an opportunity to highlight the importance of brain health and bring awareness and attention to a new brain disease annually, migraine being the designated disease for 2019.

Please join me in supporting this opportunity to recognize July 22, 2019, as “World Brain Day” in Pennsylvania to show the many who battle migraine the support they deserve.
