MEMORANDUM

Subject: Pediatric Cancer Research State Income Tax Form Check-Off

As many of you know I have been aggressively promoting House Bill 746. House Bill 746 is my bill to create a registration license plate to raise money for pediatric cancer research. Currently, House Bill 746 has 153 co-sponsors. Just this week I visited with the research staff at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital and they couldn’t have made it clearer. With more research dollars they are confident that they will save more children.

For that reason I plan to introduce legislation to establish a Pediatric Cancer Research state income tax form check-off. My hope is that all 153 co-sponsors of HB 746 will join me and co-sponsor this bill as well. Under this bill the department of revenue will provide space on the Pennsylvania individualized income tax return form whereby an individual may voluntarily designate a contribution of no less than five dollars to be utilized for pediatric cancer research within the Commonwealth. Pennsylvania taxpayers will have the OPTION to contribute $5.00 to the research efforts at OUR four research institutions. The amount designated will be deducted from the tax refund of the individual making the designation and will not constitute a charge against the income tax revenues due to the Commonwealth. It’s heartbreaking to see these children suffer and a tragedy when they lose the fight against pediatric cancer.

Here is a snap shot of the numbers:
153, the number of co-sponsors on HB 746.
7, number of children that will die today from pediatric cancer.
46, number of children that will be diagnosed with cancer today.
1 in 5, the number of children that will eventually die from cancer.
Pediatric cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among U.S. children ages 1-14.
8, average age of death for a child with pediatric cancer.
Over the last 20 years only 1 new cancer drug has been approved for pediatric use.
4%, the percentage of funds directed toward pediatric cancer research by the National Cancer Institute.
4, number of research institutions in Pennsylvania working on cutting edge research to develop better treatments and ways to combat cancer in our kids.

The new money raised through this legislation will make a difference in this war on pediatric cancer and will help fund Pediatric Cancer Research. It’s time we take real action to help fund a cure.

Please join me and co-sponsor this legislation.
