MEMORANDUM

Posted: August 14, 2015 10:52 AM
From: Representative Tim Briggs
To: All House members
Subject: Banning the use of non-native big game animals in captive hunting

In the near future, I intend to introduce legislation that would prohibit the use of non-native big game animals for captive hunts.

Captive hunting – also known as “canned hunts” – involves the killing of animals that have been trapped within man-made enclosures. The size of these enclosures can range from several square yards to hundreds of acres. In high demand for these hunts are exotic, non-native animals that may come from breeders, animal dealers, circuses, or zoos. Modeled after New York’s law, my legislation would prohibit any facility that harbors non-native big game mammals to knowingly permit their use in captive hunting.

Canned hunts are little more than shooting animals behind fences, and have nothing to do with authentic hunting practices. I hope you will join me in sponsoring this legislation to end this cruel, inhumane practice.

Introduced as HB1573
