Subject: | Co-sponsorship- School Vehicles at Railroad Crossings |
As the new academic year approaches, I intend to introduce legislation amending Title 75 (Vehicles) to make all school vehicles subject to Section 3342, which requires certain vehicles to stop at railroad crossings. This legislation will further ensure the safety of children traveling in school vans. Under current law, school buses are required to stop at all railroad crossings. However, schools vehicles are not subject to this provision. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), three neighboring states (Maryland, New Jersey and Ohio) mandate all types of school vehicles stop at railroad crossings. Requiring all Pennsylvania school vehicles, including vans designed to hold 9 or fewer students, to stop at railroad crossings will enhance student safety in our state. Thank you for your consideration of this proposal. Please do not hesitate to contact my Harrisburg office should you require any further information. |
