MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 20, 2014 02:06 PM
From: Representative John Maher
To: All House members
Subject: Cosponsors: Web-based transportation options such as UberX, Lyft and Sidecar

Dear Colleagues:

Technology’s relentless progress toward transforming everyday aspects of life can outpace statutes and regulations authored well before the new ways were even imagined.

Various web-enabled approaches to dispatching and providing point-to-point transportation have very recently been so successful where originally rolled out that competing models are now racing across America.

While your neighbors might welcome transportation network services (alphabetically, for instance, Gett, Lyft, Sidecar and UberX) because they can solve the “you can’t get there from here” problem or simply because they can offer a competitive alternative, the PUC is having some difficulty doing so due to related laws suddenly being archaic.

I will be introducing legislation soon to solve this problem and enable these innovative transportation options to be accessed by our neighbors while providing standards for insurance, licenses and so forth to protect consumers. If you would like to be part of the effort to update our law to welcome this progress, please join me as a cosponsor.

John A. Maher
Member, House of Representatives
