|Subject:||Resolution Expressing Condolences Upon the Deaths of Miners in the Recent Coal Mine Explosion in Soma, Turkey|
|In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution expressing condolences upon the deaths of hundreds of miners in a recent coal mine explosion in Soma, Turkey.
On May 14, 2014, an explosion ripped through a coal mine in Soma, Turkey as miners were preparing for a shift change. The explosion and resulting fire trapped hundreds of miners nearly a mile below the surface. While several hundred miners were rescued after the explosion, 301 deaths have been confirmed, making the Soma mine explosion the most deadly in Turkey’s mining history. Tragedies of this magnitude transcend geographic boundaries.
This resolution expresses the deepest sympathies to the people of Turkey and to the friends and families of the miners who lost their lives in this disaster.
