Subject: | Veteran's ID for Voting |
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation to amend the Election Code to allow veterans to use their health benefit cards issued by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as an acceptable ID to vote. Under the Election Code as amended by the Voter ID Law, a valid photo ID must contain an expiration date. The benefit cards issued by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs do not have an expiration date because the benefits provided to the veteran are for life. Although a specific exemption to this expiration date requirement was given to ID cards issued by an agency of the armed services, this does not apply to health benefit cards issued by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs because the VA is not an agency of the armed services. My legislation will allow these benefit cards, which contain a photo of the veteran and their name, to be used as a valid ID for voting purposes. I welcome your support of this legislation. |
