MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 11, 2013 04:14 PM
From: Representative J.P. Miranda
To: All House members
Subject: RE: Social Media Education Legislation

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation requiring students in grades 6 through 8 to receive instruction on the responsible use of social media.

In this technological age, social media is increasingly prevalent and is frequently utilized by students. Social media can be an informative and engaging tool, but it can also have many negative consequences. I believe the best course of action to help the students of the Commonwealth to learn about these consequences is to include instruction on the responsible use and purposes of social media in the technology education curriculum. This instruction will provide responsible uses of the various social media platforms, as well as teach social media behavior that ensures cyber safety, cyber security, and cyber ethics. It will also address potential negative consequences associated with social media, including cyber bullying.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation to help ensure Pennsylvania students utilize social media responsibly.
