MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 8, 2013 04:13 PM
From: Representative Mike Reese
To: All House members
Subject: Production and fruit supply expansion for wineries

In the near future I plan to introduce legislation to amend the Liquor Code.

My legislation seeks to allow Pennsylvania’s limited wineries an opportunity to expand their businesses. It will allow limited winery licensees to increase their maximum production from 200,000 gallons per year to 300,000 gallons per year. In addition, my legislation will allow these licensees to obtain the fruit for their wine from areas outside of the Commonwealth. At this time, a limited winery licensee is limited to only 25% of his fruit coming from outside of the Commonwealth, and that source must be within a 350-mile range of the winery. Prevailing climatic conditions can have a significant impact on the character of the fruit and thus the character of the wine. By allowing our limited wineries to obtain larger quantities of fruit outside of Pennsylvania, it will help change the nature and character of our wines. This in turn will help a burgeoning industry in Pennsylvania continue to grow.

Thank you in advance for your consideration of my legislation.
