Subject: | Protecting Social Media Users from Sex Offenders |
In the very near future, I will introduce legislation that amends Pennsylvania’s Megan’s Law to require the inclusion of electronic mail addresses with and used to establish social networking accounts. Megan’s Law was developed at a time before the creation of social media and social networking. As social media and social networking has evolved, the potential for predators to establish profiles and accounts exists. More to the point, we all know that the Internet can give child predators the opportunity to prey on the innocent. We have a responsibility to ensure adequate protections for our children so that we can be confident in their safety as they use these websites. Under my measure, the Pennsylvania State Police will establish a format for individuals that must registered under Megan’s Law to display on their social networking website accounts. This format will include disclosure that the person is registered in the Pennsylvania Megan’s Law Database, the year of that registration, the nature of the offense, the Tier # of that offense and the year of the last registration. Please join me in enacting this common sense amendment to Pennsylvania’s Megan’s Law. If you have any questions, please contact my Legislative Assistant Geoff Brace (gbrace@pahouse.net). |
