Subject: | Marriage Equality |
In the near future, we plan to introduce legislation that would amend Title 23 (Domestic Relations) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes to provide for marriage equality. This legislation mirrors Senate Bill 719 which was introduced earlier this year by Senator Leach. This legislation would re-define the definition of marriage as a civil contract between two people who enter into matrimony, and eliminate the current prohibition against same-sex marriage in our Commonwealth. It is important to note that this bill provides protections for religious organizations and entities that do not wish to sanction, perform, or in any way recognize such marriages. This bill would allow Pennsylvania to follow in the footsteps of California, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and the District of Columbia that already grant same-sex couples the ability to marry. Please join us in providing the same rights and protections to all couples, regardless of their sexual orientation, by co-sponsoring this important legislation. Should you have any questions about this legislation, please contact Mason Lane in Rep. Sims’ office at (717) 787-5741 or mlane@pahouse.net or Steve Morris in Rep. McCarter’s office at (215) 572-5210 or smorris@pahouse.net. Thank you. |
