In the near future, I will be introducing legislation making two changes to the Local Tax Collection Law. Currently, anyone can run to become a tax collector, my legislation would require anyone submitting a nomination petition to include a criminal history check done by the state police and would prevent anyone that has been convicted of financial crime from holding the office of tax collector. My legislation also includes an expansion of the current education program that is offered to tax collectors. Currently the education program offered by the Department of Community and Economic Development is optional for tax collectors to participate in, this legislation make the education mandatory and a requirement for an individual to take the oath of office as a tax collector.
