Subject: | Title 75 – Notification of change of motor vehicle insurance |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation which would shift the burden of notifying PennDOT of changes in insurance coverage from the consumer to the insurance companies. Currently, insurance companies only notify PennDOT when a motor vehicle liability insurance policy is canceled or terminated; however, they are not obligated to notify PennDOT when a new policy is issued. This inconsistency creates confusion over whether or not a vehicle is properly insured which then can trigger unwarranted suspensions. My bill is a common sense approach to ending this confusion by simply requiring insurance companies to notify PennDOT when a new motor vehicle liability insurance policy is issued to a motorist within 24 hours of issuance. Additionally, this legislation will save the Commonwealth a significant amount of money by avoiding unnecessary mailings and will relieve the consumer of the burden of contacting PennDOT when they change insurance companies. I hope that you will join me in co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation. Thank you in advance for your support. |
