Subject: Prohibiting Strip Searches of Students in Public Schools

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that would prohibit strip searches of students attending public schools.

As you may know, a strip search is a practice of searching a person for weapons or other contraband suspected of being hidden on their body or inside their clothing by requiring the person to remove some or all of his or her clothing. This is an intrusive search that should be done under the utmost legal authority and not by untrained professionals in our public schools.

At this writing, nothing in Pennsylvania law or regulations prohibits a school district from establishing a policy permitting the strip search of students in public schools. My legislation would change that to prohibit strip searches of students of public schools by any school employee, including teachers, principals, nurses and superintendents.

In recent weeks there has been much discussion on the legality of strip searches in public schools by several school boards in the Philadelphia area and Delaware Valley. It is my hope that with this legislation, we can protect pupils from being strip searched by their principals, teachers or other school employees.

Please join me in protecting our students from this unreasonable practice.
