Subject: | Re-Introduction of House Bill 2260 - Automatic Initiation of Election Recounts |
In the near future, I plan to re-introduce House 2260, legislation amending the Pennsylvania Election Code by requiring recounts in countywide or State legislative district elections decided by one-half of a percent of less. As you may know, the Pennsylvania Election Code permits candidates running for public office in statewide elections to initiate requests for a recount in races decided by less than one-half of the percent of all votes cast for the contested office. I believe that this same opportunity to initiate a request for a recount should be extended to candidates in a countywide or State legislative district election decided by the same margin of less than one-half of a percentage point. All candidates should be afforded equal protection under our laws, and, I believe that this amendment to the Election Code is vital to that equality. While our statewide elections are of the highest importance, they should not overshadow the significance of countywide elections. Major issues such as municipal bonds, property taxes, and contracting provisions can be greatly affected by the outcomes of these local elections. As such, it is necessary that we treat countywide elections with the same level of significance as statewide elections to ensure that constituencies are fairly represented. Please join me in ensuring that elections are conducted in such a manner that all candidates are provided a fair opportunity to represent his or her community. Previous Co-Sponsors: LONGIETTI , B.
