Session of 2013 - 2014 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 14, 2013 03:08 PM
From: Representative Jaret Gibbons
To: All House members
Subject: Income Tax Checkoff Contributions for Prostate Cancer Education and Prevention

In the near future, I intend to reintroduce House Bill 132 of the 2011-2012 Legislative Session, which would amend the Tax Reform Code of 1971 to add a space on the Pennsylvania individual income tax return allowing for contributions towards prostate cancer education and prevention. Also, this legislation establishes provisions for the oversight, expenditure, and reporting of the funds collected for prostate cancer education and prevention.

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men in the United States and the second most common cause of cancer-related death among American men. The ACS estimates that one in six men in the United States will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 1 in 36 will die from the disease. Donations made pursuant to this measure shall be deducted from the tax refund to which the individual is entitled in a manner identical to that provided for breast and cervical cancer research.
