Subject: | Redirect Tire Tax to Bridges |
I will soon introduce legislation that increases the amount of funding for bridges without raising any taxes. Currently, there is a state law that requires operators of cars to subsidize low cost, below market rate bus fare, for people who ride on mass transit. This includes a $1 per tire tax that goes directly to mass transit. My legislation will redirect this money to a bridge repair fund. Riders of mass transit systems on average save about $20 a day in parking, gasoline, and tolls. Most mass transit systems in PA charge the riders $1, $2, $3 or $4 to ride. The majority of the budget to fund the mass transit systems is from state tax money and Federal tax money. The riders on mass transit should not be subsidized by people who drive cars. When a person pays a $4 tax when they buy a new set of tires for their car, that money should go towards fixing the bridges they drive on rather than subsidizing mass transit rates. We have thousands of bridges in PA that are in need of repair or replacement. Mass transit buses and privately operated cars both use bridges, so mass transit riders will still benefit from this tire tax. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have questions regarding this legislation. |
