Subject: | Reducing Costs Associated With Parking Violations (Previous House Bill 2327) |
Simple parking violations often lead to a municipality using a tremendous amount of resources in the court system. Now is a time when we need to be giving our local governments as much flexibility as possible in order to improve their bottom line. In the near future, I will re-introduce legislation to help reduce the costs and burden on our court system. Under current law, after a parking violation is issued, unpaid parking tickets must be referred to the courts after only 30 days. This does not allow enough time for a municipality to acquire the owner’s name and address from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and send a reminder to the owner of the vehicle. My proposed legislation would allow municipalities to increase that time to 60 days if an ordinance is enacted such that the municipality will make at least one attempt to collect the fine. It is believed that such attempts would result in many more fines being paid before they are turned over to the courts where they are much more costly to collect. Last Session’s bill is attached.
