| Subject: | Rep. DiGirolamo Cosponsorship of Drug and Alcohol Training for Child Protective Service Workers Legislation |
| In the near future, I will be introducing legislation requiring that all persons classified as protective services workers receive basic training in alcohol and drug abuse and addiction, warning signs of alcohol and drug problems and how to make appropriate referrals for assessment and treatment of addiction. According to the Joint State Government Commission, “Untreated drug and alcohol abuse and addiction is believed by many to be the largest single common denominator at work in the caseloads of the children and youth services delivery system . . .” Some county agencies estimate that drug and alcohol is involved in 70% to 80% of the cases in the children and youth services system. (Advisory Committee on Services to Children and Youth, Joint State Government Commission, November 2002) Currently, all protective services workers are required to complete training through an established CORE curriculum that does not include training on drug and alcohol issues. The legislation will make training on drug and alcohol problems a requirement of the CORE curriculum. |
