Subject: | Proposed Legislation - Posting of Registration Information on Megan's Law Website |
In the near future I plan to reintroduce former House Bill 71 which will make 2 changes to the Judicial Code to enhance the posting of registration information on the Megan’s Law website when sex offenders and sexually violent predators (SVPs) are released from prison: 1. Currently, when a sex offender or SVP has been granted parole or is sentenced to probation, the Board of Probation and Parole or the county office of probation and parole collects registration information from the offender/SVP and forwards it to the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP). The state or county correctional facility may not release the offender/SVP until the PSP verifies that it has received the information. Under my proposed bill, the state or county correctional facility will be prohibited from releasing the offender/SVP until it also receives verification from the PSP that the registration information has been posted on the Megan’s Law website. 2. Also under current law, for an offender/SVP who is being released from a state/county facility because of the impending expiration of his/her maximum term of incarceration, at present the state or county facility collects registration information from the offender/SVP at least 10 days prior to the maximum expiration date and then forwards it to the PSP. My bill will require the PSP to post the registration information on the Megan’s Law website prior to the maximum expiration date.
