MEMORANDUM

Subject: Distracted Driving - Prior HB 896

In the near future, I plan to reintroduce HB 896 from the 2011-2012 legislative session regarding distracted drivers.

Some individuals safely handle distractions like cell phones, radios or eating food while driving, while others weave and crash. Recent studies show a wide variety of behaviors that can distract drivers and create dangerous situations, and so I will shortly introduce legislation that will create an additional summary offense of distracted driving if a driver is also found to be driving carelessly.

Distractions may include, but are not limited to, radios, tape recorders, cell phones, citizen band radios, televisions, computers, personal grooming devices, food, drink, books and printed matter. The fine for distracted driving will be $50.

Last session this bill passed the House by a vote of 184-12, but died in the Senate.
