A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of May 2024 as "Nurses Month" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, There are many types of nurses, including registered
nurses, licensed practical nurses and advanced practice nurses,
which include certified nurse midwives, certified registered
nurse practitioners and certified nurse anesthetists, and many
other different types as well; and
WHEREAS, Nurses were on the front lines during the COVID-19
pandemic, putting their lives at risk to look after others and
combat the novel coronavirus as models of bravery for all of us;
and
WHEREAS, Nurses accounted for one-third of all health care
workforce deaths in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic; and
WHEREAS, A strong nursing workforce increases access to
health care, reduces health disparities along socioeconomic and

racial lines and improves the health and wellness of our
communities; and
WHEREAS, Many important individuals throughout history who
modeled selfless service and broke down barriers were nurses;
and
WHEREAS, Florence Nightingale was considered the founder of
modern nursing, and she established the first scientifically
based nursing school in London; and
WHEREAS, Harriet Tubman, who led enslaved people to freedom
through the underground railroad in Pennsylvania, was a nurse;
and
WHEREAS, Other notable individuals throughout history who
worked in the nursing field include Mother Teresa, Dorothea Dix,
Walt Whitman, Hazel Johnson-Brown, Sylvia Mendez and Mary Eliza
Mahoney; and
WHEREAS, Nurses do not just work in hospitals and doctors'
offices but in many workplaces and settings; and
WHEREAS, School nurses ensure full health care access for
both children experiencing medical emergencies and children with
chronic medical conditions; and
WHEREAS, It takes years of schooling and passing
accreditation exams in order to become a nurse; and
WHEREAS, A successful nurse's crucial skills include critical
thinking, compassion, professionalism, stress management and
resilience; and
WHEREAS, Many nurses work long shifts and odd hours that can
keep them away from their families and friends; and
WHEREAS, Nurses do important, tiring and thankless work all
throughout our society; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage
supporting a robust and respected nursing workforce to have a
strong and healthy Commonwealth.
