A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of September 2023 as "Suicide Prevention
Awareness Month" and September 10, 2023, as "World Suicide
Prevention Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Suicide accounted for 48,183 deaths in 2021, with
approximately one death from suicide occurring every 11 minutes;
and
WHEREAS, More than 700,000 people around the world die by
suicide each year; and
WHEREAS, According to the World Health Organization, the
COVID-19 pandemic triggered a 25% increase in the prevalence of
anxiety and depression; and
WHEREAS, Suicide is on the rise again after two years of
decline; and
WHEREAS, Suicide is the eleventh leading cause of death in
the United States and the second leading cause of death for
those 10 to 14 years of age; and

WHEREAS, Stigma surrounding mental health and suicide
prevents many individuals who are contemplating suicide from
seeking and receiving appropriate treatment; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
month of September 2023 as "Suicide Prevention Awareness Month"
and September 10, 2023, as "World Suicide Prevention Day" in
Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
seriousness of the issue of suicide in Pennsylvania and
encourage the education of Pennsylvania residents on the matter.
