A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of June 2023 as "Alzheimer's and Brain
Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is a form of dementia that
affects a person's behavior, cognitive function and memory and
can detrimentally impact the function of daily tasks; and
WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is a progressive disease that
worsens over time and has no cure; and
WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of
dementia and is prevalent in close to 80% of all cases; and
WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease can cause a withdrawal from work
and social activities, leading to a prevalence in depression for
those with this disease; and
WHEREAS, More than 280,000 residents of this Commonwealth
were diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2020, and the
prevalence of this disease is set to increase significantly

within just the next two years; and
WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease was the fifth-leading cause of
death for individuals 65 years of age and older and is a leading
cause for disability and morbidity in older adults; and
WHEREAS, Eighty-three percent of care provided to older
adults comes from family members who are unpaid; and
WHEREAS, In 2022, across the United States, an estimated 18
billion hours were spent by family members caring for their
loved ones which equates to $339.5 billion in unpaid care; and
WHEREAS, Fifty-nine percent of unpaid family caregivers have
reported high emotional stress and have significantly more
financial and physical difficulties in comparison to caregivers
of people without dementia; and
WHEREAS, In order to meet the needs of Pennsylvanians with
Alzheimer's disease and other dementia illnesses, the health
care workforce serving older adults needs to expand rapidly and
training for those who care for individuals with dementia must
be strengthened; and
WHEREAS, This Commonwealth is committed to supporting those
with Alzheimer's disease and their caregivers; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives believes that a cure to
Alzheimer's disease is attainable within the next decade if
proper Federal, State and local resources are committed;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
month of June 2023 as "Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month" in
Pennsylvania.
