A RESOLUTION
Honoring all Pennsylvania veterans who served during war and
peace on the occasion of Veterans Day, November 11, 2021.
WHEREAS, In 1918, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day in
the eleventh month, the world rejoiced and celebrated because,
after four years of bitter war, an armistice was signed that
declared the "war to end all wars" over; and
WHEREAS, November 11 was set aside as Armistice Day in the
United States to remember the sacrifices men and women made
during World War I in order to ensure a lasting peace; and
WHEREAS, On Armistice Day, soldiers who survived the war
marched in parades through their hometowns, and politicians,
public officials and veteran officers gave speeches and held
ceremonies of thanks for the peace they had won; and
WHEREAS, The Congress of the United States voted Armistice
Day a legal holiday in 1938, but Americans realized that the
previous war would not be the last one; and
WHEREAS, World War II began the following year, and nations

great and small again participated in a bloody struggle; and
WHEREAS, After World War II, Armistice Day continued to be
observed on November 11; and
WHEREAS, In 1953, townspeople in Emporia, Kansas, called the
holiday "Veterans Day" in gratitude to the veterans in their
town; and
WHEREAS, Soon after, Congress passed a bill renaming the
national holiday as Veterans Day; and
WHEREAS, Americans still give thanks to veterans for their
service on Veterans Day with ceremonies and speeches, and, at 11
a.m., many Americans observe a moment of silence in remembrance
of those who fought and for those who gave their lives to
preserve the freedoms we now enjoy; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate honor all Pennsylvania veterans who
served during war and peace on the occasion of Veterans Day,
November 11, 2021; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Senate encourage communities to
participate in Veterans Day ceremonies across this Commonwealth
in recognition of the nearly 800,000 current Pennsylvania
residents who have served in the Armed Forces to protect the
United States and this Commonwealth during our greatest times of
need.
