A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of October 2021 as "Pregnancy and Infant
Loss Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Pregnancy and infant loss includes loss during and
after pregnancy, stillbirths, neonatal death, miscarriage and
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS); and
WHEREAS, A miscarriage is the loss of a baby before the 20th
week of pregnancy, and a stillbirth is the loss of a baby at 20
weeks of pregnancy and later, and both of these experiences are
pregnancy losses; and
WHEREAS, According to the American College of Obstetrics and
Gynecology, as many as 26% of all pregnancies and up to 10% of
clinically recognized pregnancies end in miscarriage; and
WHEREAS, According to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, stillbirth affects about 1% of all pregnancies in
the United States, and there are approximately 24,000
stillbirths reported each year; and
WHEREAS, According to the National Institute for Health, SIDS

is the sudden, unexplained death of an infant younger than one
year of age that does not have a known cause even after a
complete investigation and more than 1,000 infants die each year
from SIDS; and
WHEREAS, The availability of information and support is of
the utmost importance to the individuals and families who
experience pregnancy and infant loss to better help them cope;
and
WHEREAS, A public that is informed and educated about
pregnancy loss can better learn how to respond with compassion
to affected individuals and families; and
WHEREAS, Professionals who come in contact with individuals
who have suffered pregnancy loss, such as physicians, clergy,
emergency medical technicians, funeral directors, police
officers, public health nurses, educators and employers, can
better serve families if they have better knowledge of
miscarriage or pregnancy loss; and
WHEREAS, In 1988, October was officially proclaimed as
"National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month" to
recognize the grief of families, remember all of the pregnancies
lost and increase awareness about pregnancy loss, and many
organizations have continued to recognize the month of October
in this way; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of October 2021
as "Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
