INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, JUNE 7, 2021
A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of June 2021 as "Cancer Survivors
Recognition Month" in Pennsylvania and honoring all cancer
survivors for their strength and courage in the face of this
devastating illness.
WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that there
will be 1,900,000 new cases of cancer diagnosed in the United
States in 2021; and
WHEREAS, As a result of advances in early detection and
treatment, cancer has become a curable disease for some and a
chronic illness for many others; and
WHEREAS, A cancer survivor is anyone living with a history of
cancer from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of
life; and
WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society and the National Cancer
Institute estimate that more than 16.9 million Americans with a
history of invasive cancer were alive in the United States on

January 1, 2019; and
WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society reported in 2021 that
there will be an estimated 85,440 new cancer cases in this
Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, A cancer survivor can be your parent, child,
grandparent, family member, friend, neighbor or colleague; and
WHEREAS, Cancer survivorship has three distinct phases:
living with cancer, living through cancer and living beyond
cancer; and
WHEREAS, Survivorship can be both stressful and hopeful; and
WHEREAS, Surviving cancer can leave a host of problems in its
wake; and
WHEREAS, Physical, emotional and financial hardships often
persist for years after diagnosis and treatment; and
WHEREAS, Many cancer survivors are deeply grateful to their
caregivers, family, friends, health care providers and
communities for their love, dedication and support as they
battle cancer; and
WHEREAS, Despite the fear, challenges and setbacks, life
after a cancer diagnosis can be meaningful, productive and even
inspiring and triumphant; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of June 2021 as
"Cancer Survivors Recognition Month" in Pennsylvania in
celebration of life; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Senate honor all cancer survivors and urge
all residents to pause and honor those who are living with a
history of cancer for their strength, courage dand inspiration.
