A RESOLUTION
Honoring the life of United States Capitol Police Officer Brian
D. Sicknick, who died on January 7, 2021, as a result of
injuries sustained during the insurrection at the United
States Capitol on January 6, 2021.
WHEREAS, The United States Capitol and the legislative
institutions throughout our nation are important symbols of
democracy and freedom; and
WHEREAS, Our institutions of democracy are safeguarded by law
enforcement officers who dedicate themselves to the security and
safety of elected officials to ensure they can fulfill their
constitutional and legislative responsibilities; and
WHEREAS, In this Commonwealth, the Bureau of Police and
Safety, commonly known as the Pennsylvania Capitol Police, has
maintained a safe and secure environment for employees and
visitors in the Pennsylvania Capitol Complex since its
establishment in 1895; and
WHEREAS, The recent attacks targeting the United States

Capitol exemplify the risks faced by law enforcement officers
across the nation in responding to threats against our
institutions of democracy; and
WHEREAS, On Wednesday, January 6, 2021, an attack by violent
insurrectionists on the United States Capitol gravely threatened
the physical well-being of the Vice President of the United
States, members of the United States Senate and House of
Representatives and many of the civilians working within the
United States Capitol Complex; and
WHEREAS, The United States Capitol Police, along with other
law enforcement agencies, demonstrated acts of bravery and
service when they directly engaged with the violent
insurrectionists at the United States Capitol; and
WHEREAS, During the attack on January 6, 2021, United States
Capitol Police Officer Brian D. Sicknick sustained injuries
while defending the United States Capitol from the violent
insurrectionists trying to unlawfully enter the building; and
WHEREAS, On January 7, 2021, Officer Sicknick succumbed to
the injuries he sustained during the insurrection at the United
States Capitol; and
WHEREAS, Officer Sicknick was born in South River, New
Jersey, and was a member of the New Jersey Air National Guard,
where he served in Saudi Arabia and Kyrgyzstan; and
WHEREAS, Officer Sicknick joined the United States Capitol
Police Department in 2008, where he continued to live up to the
oath he swore in the military: "to protect and defend the
Constitution of the United States"; and
WHEREAS, The death of Officer Sicknick is a tragic loss of an
individual who embodied the spirit of patriotism by protecting
our democratic process, institutions and elected members tasked

with certifying the will of the people; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of his service to the nation, Officer
Sicknick was given the rare distinction of lying in honor in the
United States Capitol Rotunda, being only the fifth individual
to receive the designation; and
WHEREAS, The bravery demonstrated by Officer Sicknick on
January 6, 2021, along with the other United States Capitol
Police and law enforcement officers, was exemplary and displayed
the service and sacrifice of the individuals tasked with
protecting our institutions of democracy; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania honor the life of United States
Capitol Police Officer Brian D. Sicknick, who died on January 7,
2021, as a result of injuries sustained during the insurrection
at the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021.
