A RESOLUTION
Commemorating Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights.
WHEREAS, Diwali is a five-day festival celebrated in
accordance with various versions of an ancient Hindu story; and
WHEREAS, In northern India, the tale recalls the return of
Lord Rama from a 14-year exile; and
WHEREAS, Upon Rama's return, his people decorated the city
Ayodhya with candles and lights to welcome him; and
WHEREAS, In southern India, the legend speaks of the Goddess
Durga's triumph over the evil demon Narakasura, symbolizing the
triumph of good over evil and the return of the light of
knowledge and truth to mankind; and
WHEREAS, On the third day, considered the most important day
of Diwali, the lights are lit to welcome Lakshmi, the Goddess of
Wealth; and
WHEREAS, While it is easy to get lost in the sparkle, glitter
and extravaganza of the lights and festive mood, one of the core
characteristics of the Diwali festival is to serve and feed the

needy during the festive occasion and give thanks for what has
been bestowed upon us so generously; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate commemorate Diwali, the Hindu
festival of lights, and extend warmest wishes for the future,
replete with ever-increasing success.
