A RESOLUTION
Raising awareness of the dangers of smoking and vaping during
the COVID-19 pandemic.
WHEREAS, According to the Center for Tobacco Control Research
and Education, smoking is associated with more than doubling the
odds of disease progression in people who had already developed
COVID-19; and
WHEREAS, According to the World Health Organization, smokers
are more likely to develop severe disease with COVID-19 compared
with nonsmokers; and
WHEREAS, According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse,
COVID-19 is an especially serious threat to those who smoke
tobacco or who vape because the disease attacks the lungs; and
WHEREAS, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the
Food and Drug Administration, the Surgeon General and State
health departments advocate that stopping smoking and vaping and
avoiding secondhand exposure should be added to the list of
important preventative measures for COVID-19; and
WHEREAS, Smokers should discuss with their doctors options to

quit smoking or vaping, including nicotine patches, gum or
smoking cessation medications, with expert coaching and support,
including calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate raise awareness of the dangers of
smoking and vaping during the COVID-19 pandemic; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That the Senate encourage individuals who smoke or
vape to make every effort to quit during the COVID-19 pandemic
because of the serious potential risks associated with smoking
or vaping and COVID-19.
