A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of May 10 through May 16, 2020, as
"National Hospital Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania hospitals and health systems ensure
health care services are available in this Commonwealth 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week, providing acute inpatient care as well as
outpatient, emergency, behavioral health, rehabilitation, long-
term and home care services; and
WHEREAS, Specialized hospital care is provided by
Pennsylvania's 41 trauma centers, 7 burn centers and the 15
critical access hospitals that provide care for the most rural
populations in this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is home to 7 medical degree-granting
medical schools, 289 nursing programs and numerous academic
medical centers and teaching hospitals that train future health
care providers and invest in critical health research; and
WHEREAS, Originating in Chicago, "National Hospital Week"
dates back to 1921 as an event to build trust during the Spanish

influenza outbreak; and
WHEREAS, The celebration serves as a reminder that hospitals
are foundations of the communities that built them and serve
people from all walks of life in every community; and
WHEREAS, "National Hospital Week" celebrates hospitals and
the women and men who support the health of their communities
through dedication and compassionate care; and
WHEREAS, Today, Pennsylvania hospitals are multidimensional
organizations that partner with many other organizations in
their communities to offer care with a focus on population
health, disease prevention and wellness; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania hospitals provide free care to those
who have none or inadequate health care insurance coverage; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania hospitals provided nearly $764.8
million in uncompensated care during 2018; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania hospitals contributed more than $136.1
billion to this Commonwealth's economy during 2018; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania hospitals are among the leading
employers in their communities, providing approximately 654,000
total jobs, directly and indirectly; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the week of May 10
through May 16, 2020, as "National Hospital Week" in
Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Senate urge its members to visit the
hospitals in their communities to learn about the innovative,
quality care and services that are improving the health and
quality of life for residents of this Commonwealth.
