A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of February 24 through March 1, 2020, as
"Eating Disorders Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania in
conjunction with the observance of "National Eating Disorders
Awareness Week."
WHEREAS, The National Eating Disorders Association's (NEDA's)
"National Eating Disorders Awareness Week" is the largest and
best-known eating disorders outreach effort in the country; and
WHEREAS, The goal of "National Eating Disorders Awareness
Week" or "NEDAwareness Week" is to shine the spotlight on eating
disorders by educating the public, spreading a message of hope
and putting life-saving resources into the hands of those in
need; and
WHEREAS, Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of
any mental illness and approximately 30 million Americans
struggle at some point in their lives with an eating disorder;
and
WHEREAS, These disorders affect people across all backgrounds
and include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating

disorders; and
WHEREAS, In 2019, "NEDAwareness Week" encouraged individuals
to Come as You Are, highlighting NEDA's movement toward
inclusivity in the greater eating disorder community and
unifying the field; and
WHEREAS, Come as You Are is intent on conveying to
individuals at all stages of body acceptance and eating
disorders recovery that their stories are valid; and
WHEREAS, Building off of last year's success, the theme for
this year, Come as You Are: Hindsight is 2020, reflects on the
positive steps that individuals have taken, including those
stemming from setbacks and challenges, toward accepting
themselves and others; and
WHEREAS, The goal of the 2020 Come as You Are: Hindsight is
2020 theme is to expand conversations, dispel myths, provide an
online screening tool and share a wide range of experiences,
resources and diverse stories of recovery; and
WHEREAS, Signs and symptoms of eating disorders are often
overlooked, and many individuals, families and communities are
unaware of the devastating mental and physical consequences of
eating disorders, as well as the pressures, attitudes and
behaviors that shape them; and
WHEREAS, Many cases of eating disorders go undetected and
less than one-third of youths with eating disorders receive
treatment; and
WHEREAS, Eating disorder experts have found that prompt,
intensive treatment significantly improves the chances of
recovery; and
WHEREAS, The Senate recognizes that "National Eating
Disorders Awareness Week" highlights the importance of

screenings for early detection and intervention of eating
disorders, dispels myths and presents eating disorders as a
public health issue with close connections to substance abuse,
obesity, trauma and other mental health conditions such as
depression, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder; therefore
be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the week of February 24
through March 1, 2020, as "Eating Disorders Awareness Week" in
Pennsylvania in conjunction with the observance of "National
Eating Disorders Awareness Week."
