A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the decommissioning of USS Pittsburgh (SSN 720) in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, USS Pittsburgh was commissioned on November 23,
1985, as a Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered fast-attack
submarine; and
WHEREAS, Los Angeles-class submarines dive to depths of 650
feet, travel at speeds of more than 25 knots and carry 25
torpedo tube-launched weapons, including Tomahawk cruise
missiles and Harpoon missiles; and
WHEREAS, USS Pittsburgh had a crew of 150 and completed more
than 1,000 dives, a rare milestone in the United States Navy;
and
WHEREAS, USS Pittsburgh is the fourth vessel to be named
after the City of Pittsburgh in the history of the United States
Navy; and
WHEREAS, The first Pittsburgh-named vessel was an ironclad
gunboat commissioned in 1862, which served during the American

Civil War; and
WHEREAS, The second Pittsburgh-named vessel was an armored
cruiser commissioned in 1905, which later served during World
War I; and
WHEREAS, The third Pittsburgh-named vessel was a Baltimore-
class cruiser commissioned in 1944, which served during World
War II; and
WHEREAS, During more than 35 years of service, USS Pittsburgh
saw 15 deployments to the European theater, the Middle East,
Africa and the Caribbean; and
WHEREAS, USS Pittsburgh deployed for both Operation Desert
Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom; and
WHEREAS, USS Pittsburgh's presence in ports all over the
world was critical to strengthening partnerships with United
States' allies and advancing international security; and
WHEREAS, Under Commander Jason Diechler, a native of
Pittsburgh, USS Pittsburgh returned from its final patrol by
traveling under ice in an unprecedented Arctic transit; and
WHEREAS, USS Pittsburgh was decommissioned in Bremerton,
Washington, on January 17, 2020; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate commemorate the decommissioning of
USS Pittsburgh (SSN 720) in Pennsylvania.
