A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of September 2019 as "Ovarian Cancer
Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer-
related deaths among women; and
WHEREAS, The lifetime risk of developing the disease is 1 in
78; and
WHEREAS, The risk of dying from invasive ovarian cancer is 1
in 108; and
WHEREAS, Recent estimates of the American Cancer Society
indicate 22,530 new ovarian cancer cases and 13,980 ovarian
cancer deaths in 2019; and
WHEREAS, Early-stage ovarian cancer is difficult to detect;
and
WHEREAS, Treatment generally involves a combination of
surgery and chemotherapy; and
WHEREAS, Inhibitor drugs, radiation therapy and hormonal

therapy are other treatment options; and
WHEREAS, Early access to palliative care can extend survival
for women with advanced disease; and
WHEREAS, Targeted drugs, screening, imaging, psychological
effects and biological factors, including hereditary risk, are
areas of research; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of September
2019 as "Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
