A RESOLUTION
Designating April 30, 2019, as "Life Sciences Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, This Commonwealth has a rich history of research and
innovation, including being home to the nation's first hospital,
medical school and college of pharmacy; and
WHEREAS, Many of the world's greatest medical breakthroughs
have come from research conducted in this Commonwealth and have
fundamentally reshaped health care and improved lives for
millions of people worldwide, including vaccines against blood-
based hepatitis B, rubella, rotavirus and polio, as well as the
first simultaneous heart, liver and kidney transplant; and
WHEREAS, This Commonwealth has geographic access to
regulatory agencies in Washington, DC, and financial markets in
New York City, as well as unique talent from its numerous higher
educational institutions; and
WHEREAS, Researchers and executives in this Commonwealth's
numerous higher education institutions emulate the remarkable

legacy of innovative leaders, including Dr. M. Stephen "Doc"
Heilman, the late Dr. Jonas Salk, Dr. Hubert J.P. Schoemaker and
Frank Baldino, Jr., Ph.D.; and
WHEREAS, This Commonwealth is home to two of the top five
recipients of the National Institutes of Health funding for
research institutions in the University of Pennsylvania and the
University of Pittsburgh, as well as the nation's largest
independent research institution dedicated to women's health and
reproductive biologies in Magee-Womens Research Institute; and
WHEREAS, The life sciences industry is a cornerstone of this
Commonwealth's economic future, directly employing more than
110,000 workers, with an economic impact from wages alone
totaling $11 billion and a total industry annual impact of more
than $88 billion; and
WHEREAS, This Commonwealth is uniquely positioned as the home
of a diverse and robust life sciences ecosystem in one location
through seed capital, discovery research, emerging industry,
contract laboratory organizations, medical devices and
diagnostics companies, mature biopharmaceutical industry and
global pharmaceuticals; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate April 30, 2019, as "Life
Sciences Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Senate encourage all Pennsylvanians to
learn more about this vibrant industry.
