A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the 49th celebration of "Earth Day" on April 22,
2019, in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, On April 22, 1970, United States Senator Gaylord
Nelson of Wisconsin created the concept of "Earth Day" to
increase public awareness of the world's environmental problems;
and
WHEREAS, Increasingly, more individuals recognize "Earth Day"
each year, but until "Earth Day" is recognized by all
individuals, we must continue to spread the word; and
WHEREAS, The necessity for individuals to step up and protect
the planet is more essential now than ever, especially for the
people in the United States and this Commonwealth who believe
that protecting the environment is crucial for conserving our
health, our economy and all living things that share the planet
alongside us; and
WHEREAS, All living things have an intrinsic value and each
plays a unique role in the complex web of life; and

WHEREAS, The theme of "Earth Day" 2019 is "Protect Our
Species"; and
WHEREAS, Many of our declining, threatened and endangered
species can still recover and the rate of extinctions can be
slowed; and
WHEREAS, The "Earth Day" 2019 campaign sets forth a series of
goals to aid in the protection of the world's species, which
include educating and raising awareness about the rate of
extinction of species and the causes and consequences of this
phenomenon, implementing policies that protect species and their
habitats, building and activating a global movement that
embraces nature and its values and encouraging individual
actions such as adopting plant-based diets and stopping
pesticide and herbicide use; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the 49th celebration of
"Earth Day" on April 22, 2019, in Pennsylvania; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That the Senate encourage the residents of this
Commonwealth to help in any way possible to advance and achieve
the goals set forth by "Earth Day" 2019 to protect the world's
species.
