A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of November 2020 as "Equine Month" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, There are an estimated 223,628 horses in this
Commonwealth, ranking this Commonwealth as the State with the
eighth highest number of horses in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Approximately 793,000 acres of land in this
Commonwealth are used for horse-related purposes; and
WHEREAS, The equine industry contributes a total of $3.3
billion to this Commonwealth's economy; and
WHEREAS, The horse recreation sector adds $609 million
directly to this Commonwealth's economy and supports 8,450 jobs
in this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, The horse competition sector adds $525 million
directly to this Commonwealth's economy and supports 7,640 jobs
in the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, The horse racing sector adds $806 million directly
to this Commonwealth's economy and supports 7,385 jobs in this

Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, The equine industry has a total employment impact of
60,133 jobs in this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, In this Commonwealth, 30.5% of households have at
least one horse enthusiast; and
WHEREAS, The most popular breed of horse in this Commonwealth
is the Quarter Horse, followed by the Thoroughbred and the
Warmblood; and
WHEREAS, There are 23 equine rescues and sanctuaries in this
Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, There are 63 facilities in this Commonwealth that
offer equine-related therapy; and
WHEREAS, There are four colleges and universities in this
Commonwealth that offer equine-related degrees and programs; and
WHEREAS, In the 10 counties of the southeastern region of
this Commonwealth, there are more than 50,000 horses,
representing a 9.3% increase than reported five years ago; and
WHEREAS, The equine industry directly or indirectly accounts
for nearly $670 million of economic activity in the southeastern
region of this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, The equine industry provides more than 6,550 jobs in
the southeastern region of this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Taxpayers in the southeastern region of this
Commonwealth benefit from $58 million in tax revenue generated
by equine activities; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
month of November 2020 as "Equine Month" in Pennsylvania.
