A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of October 2020 as "Energy Awareness
Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, President George H. W. Bush first declared October
as "National Energy Awareness Month" in 1991; and
WHEREAS, President Bush encouraged the Federal Government and
organizations to recognize the importance of responsibly
managing the nation's energy resources; and
WHEREAS, The United States has taken great strides toward
energy efficiency by developing and promoting energy-efficient
products in homes; and
WHEREAS, The use of energy-efficient products has reduced
consumer utility bills; and
WHEREAS, The Federal Government and the Commonwealth have
promoted energy efficiency; and
WHEREAS, According to the United States Energy Information
Administration (EIA), Pennsylvania:
(1) is the second-largest natural gas producer in the

United States;
(2) is the second-largest net supplier of total energy
to other states;
(3) is the third-largest coal producing state; and
(4) ranks third in electricity generation and, in 2018,
nuclear power was the largest electricity generator in this
Commonwealth;
and
WHEREAS, The EIA reports that as of 2018, approximately 51%
of Pennsylvania households used natural gas as their primary
home heating fuel, 22% used electricity and 24% used fuel oil
and other heating fuels, including propane and wood; and
WHEREAS, According to the EIA, Pennsylvania's first
commercial wind farm started generating electricity in 2000, and
this Commonwealth currently has 24 operating wind farms with
approximately 1,400 megawatts of capacity; and
WHEREAS, According to the Solar Energies Industries
Association, Pennsylvania had approximately 68,000 homes powered
by solar energy, there were approximately 4,200 solar jobs as of
2019 and approximately $179,000,000 were invested in 2019 in
this Commonwealth; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
month of October 2020 as "Energy Awareness Month" in
Pennsylvania.
