A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of June 2020 as "Cancer Survivors
Recognition Month" in Pennsylvania and honoring all cancer
survivors for their strength and courage in the face of this
devastating illness.
WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that there
will be 1.8 million new cases of cancer diagnosed in the United
States in 2020; and
WHEREAS, As a result of advances in early detection and
treatment, cancer has become a curable disease for some and a
chronic illness for many others; and
WHEREAS, A cancer survivor is anyone living with a history of
cancer from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of
life; and
WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society and the National Cancer
Institute estimate that 15.5 million Americans with a history of
cancer were alive in January 2016; and

WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network
reported in 2016 that there were 711,240 cancer survivors in
this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, A cancer survivor can be your parent, child,
grandparent, family member, friend, coworker or neighbor; and
WHEREAS, Cancer survivorship has three distinct phases:
living with cancer, living through cancer and living beyond
cancer; and
WHEREAS, Survivorship can be both stressful and hopeful; and
WHEREAS, Surviving cancer can leave a host of problems in its
wake; and
WHEREAS, Physical, emotional and financial hardships often
persist for years after diagnosis and treatment; and
WHEREAS, Many cancer survivors are deeply grateful to their
caregivers, family, friends, health care providers and
communities for their love, dedication and support as they
battle cancer; and
WHEREAS, Despite the fear, challenges and setbacks, life
after a cancer diagnosis can be meaningful, productive and even
inspiring and triumphant; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
month of June 2020 as "Cancer Survivors Recognition Month" in
Pennsylvania in celebration of life; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor all cancer
survivors and urge all residents to pause and honor those who
are living with a history of cancer for their strength, courage
and inspiration.
