A RESOLUTION
Designating the week of May 3 through 9, 2020, as "Higher
Education Mental Health Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, An increasing number of college students are
diagnosed with, or receive treatment for, a mental health
condition; and
WHEREAS, Half of all college students rate their mental
health as below average or poor and 30% of college students
report that they have problems with school work due to a mental
health issue; and
WHEREAS, A survey of 400 college counseling center directors
found that 95% of the directors believe that the number of
college students with significant psychological problems is a
growing concern; and
WHEREAS, Eight out of ten college students report feeling
stress on a daily basis; and
WHEREAS, The American College Health Association conducted a

nationwide assessment and found that, in the past year, three
out of five college students experienced overwhelming anxiety
and two out of five college students were too depressed to
function; and
WHEREAS, Seventy-five percent of college students who suffer
from depression do not seek help for their mental health issues;
and
WHEREAS, According to the National Alliance on Mental
Illness, one out of ten college students has made a plan for
suicide, and suicide is the second leading cause of death among
college students; and
WHEREAS, College should be a time of growth, learning and
exploration, where students feel safe and are enthusiastic about
their future, not a time of immense stress and anxiety; and
WHEREAS, "Mental Health Awareness Month" has been observed in
the month of May since 1949; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
week of May 3 through 9, 2020, as "Higher Education Mental
Health Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives, in support of
"Higher Education Mental Health Awareness Week," call on the
residents of this Commonwealth to raise awareness in their
communities about mental health issues on college campuses and
provide support to the college students in their lives.
