A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of May 2020 as "National Moving Month" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, America's moving and storage industry consists of
7,000 companies operating at 13,900 locations with more than
122,000 employees and an annual payroll of $3.6 billion; and
WHEREAS, Professional movers successfully move more than 35
million Americans every year, helping more than 11% of Americans
move to new homes annually; and
WHEREAS, The American Moving & Storage Association recently
published an Economic Impact Study showing that the industry
generates more than $12 billion in annual revenue; and
WHEREAS, The busiest season for moving businesses begins in
May and runs through September as people use the summer season
to move to new homes while school is out; and
WHEREAS, The United States Department of Transportation
received more than 4,100 complaints of moving fraud in 2017,
where disreputable movers drained families financially and
emotionally through fraudulent business practices and theft; and

WHEREAS, Organizations such as the American Moving & Storage
Association and the Better Business Bureau have come together to
spread awareness of moving fraud and promote good practices to
help protect consumers; and
WHEREAS, It is important for individuals planning a move to
compare companies, ask for estimates in writing, provide the
movers with an accurate description of everything that needs to
be taken care of and ask as many questions as possible to
eliminate any surprises and confusion during the moving process;
and
WHEREAS, Individuals looking for a moving company should
avoid tell-tale signs of disreputable movers by avoiding
companies that do not provide estimates in writing, demand
upfront cash deposits, provide partial contracts, and do not
have branded moving vehicles; now therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
month of May 2020 as "National Moving Month" in Pennsylvania;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives and all
Pennsylvanians work to avoid and report disreputable movers to
protect themselves and each other from falling victim to moving
fraud.
