A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of April 2020 as "Global Citizen Science
Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, "Global Citizen Science Month" is an annual event
sponsored by SciStarter in coordination with the National
Library of Medicine, Arizona State University, the Citizen
Association, Science Friday and National Geographic to celebrate
and promote all things citizen science; and
WHEREAS, SciStarter is an online community that originally
grew out of a project by Darlene Cavalier at the University of
Pennsylvania to help improve the citizen science experience for
project managers and participants; and
WHEREAS, Citizen science is a collaboration between
scientists and everyday people that helps accelerate research
and discovery in many areas, including ecology, astronomy,
medicine, computer science, statistics, psychology, genetics,
engineering and many more; and

WHEREAS, Citizen science projects actively involve citizens
to participate in the scientific process by asking questions,
making observations, conducting experiments or collecting data
to generate new knowledge and understanding; and
WHEREAS, Citizen science is accessible to people everywhere,
anytime regardless of age, interests or location; and
WHEREAS, During "Global Citizen Science Month,"
Pennsylvanians can participate in six different projects,
including gathering light pollution data, researching about the
flu, submitting sightings of litter, documenting change in
weather and climate, playing an online game to help with
Alzheimer's research and creating a national inventory of tap
water pipes; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvanians can contribute to more than 3,000
projects year-round which have been registered by leaders in the
Federal Government, NGOs and universities; and
WHEREAS, Citizen science helps cultivate a society that is
knowledgeable about the world around them by helping individuals
learn outside of the classroom through engaging experiences that
can result in individuals influencing larger decisions about
science policy; and
WHEREAS, The public participation provided through citizen
projects enables scientific investigations that would not
otherwise be possible; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
month of April 2020 as "Global Citizen Science Month" in
Pennsylvania.
