A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of May 16 through 22, 2020, as "National
Safe Boating Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Every year, Pennsylvanians take to the water on
various watercraft, from yachts on Lake Erie to one-person
kayaks on the many creeks and rivers in our Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Safe boating practices are everyone's
responsibility; and
WHEREAS, The laws of this Commonwealth require anyone born
after January 1, 1982, to obtain a boating safety certificate to
operate a personal watercraft or powerboat with a motor greater
than 25 horsepower; and
WHEREAS, Boating safety in Pennsylvania not only includes
safe operation of the vessel but also the use of life jackets;
and
WHEREAS, There were 306,781 recreational vehicles registered
within the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission in 2018; and

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania had 63 reportable recreational boating
accidents of all types in 2018; and
WHEREAS, Fourteen of those 63 accidents resulted in
fatalities, which is more than 20% of all boating accidents in
this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Of the 14 deaths in 2018 due to boating accidents,
11 were the result of drowning; and
WHEREAS, During the week of May 16 through 22, boating groups
throughout Pennsylvania and the country are promoting boating
safety and wearing life jackets; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
week of May 16 through 22, 2020, as "National Safe Boating Week"
in Pennsylvania.
