A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of April 2020 as "National Primary
Immunodeficiency Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, According to the Immune Deficiency Foundation (IDF),
primary immunodeficiency diseases (PIDDs) are a group of more
than 350 rare, chronic disorders in which part of the body's
immune system is missing or functions improperly; and
WHEREAS, PIDDs are noncontagious diseases caused by genetic
or hereditary factors that may affect anyone and may manifest at
any age; and
WHEREAS, PIDDs may affect the immune system in a variety of
ways, but are each the result of defects in an individual's
immune system; and
WHEREAS, PIDDs leave individuals at greater risk of infection
and can make infections more difficult to cure; and
WHEREAS, Common symptoms of PIDDs include frequent and longer
lasting infections as well as opportunistic infections, which an

individual with a healthy immune system is unlikely to contract;
and
WHEREAS, Proper medical treatment of PIDDs enables many
individuals with immune deficiencies to live full and
independent lives; and
WHEREAS, Treatment of PIDDs includes prevention and treatment
of infections, treatment to improve the functioning of the
immune system and treatment of the underlying cause of immune
system deficiencies; and
WHEREAS, The IDF was founded in 1980 in order to improve "the
diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life of people affected by
primary immunodeficiency through fostering a community empowered
by advocacy, education, and research"; and
WHEREAS, The IDF has designated the month of April as
"National Primary Immunodeficiency Awareness Month" in order to
raise awareness about primary immunodeficiency disease and
facilitate earlier diagnosis and improved treatment outcomes for
individuals with such diseases; and
WHEREAS, It is important to spread awareness of PIDDs in
order to improve the quality of life for individuals suffering
with immune deficiencies in this Commonwealth and throughout the
United States; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
month of April 2020 as "National Primary Immunodeficiency
Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
