A RESOLUTION
Recognizing March 26, 2020, as "Epilepsy Awareness Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, "Epilepsy Awareness Day" is observed on March 26 of
each year throughout the world and has become known as "Purple
Day"; and
WHEREAS, Epilepsy is a neurological condition sometimes
referred to as a seizure disorder and is characterized by
recurring seizures; and
WHEREAS, As the fourth most common neurological disorder in
the United States, ranked behind migraine headache, stroke and
Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy affects 3.4 million Americans of
all ages; and
WHEREAS, According to the World Health Organization, nearly
50 million people around the world live with epilepsy; and
WHEREAS, Approximately 150,000 new cases of epilepsy occur in
the United States each year, most often in young children and

senior citizens; and
WHEREAS, One in 26 individuals will develop epilepsy in his
or her lifetime; and
WHEREAS, Up to 50,000 Americans die each year from epilepsy
and related causes, including sudden unexplained death; and
WHEREAS, The Epilepsy Association of Western and Central
Pennsylvania and the Epilepsy Foundation Eastern Pennsylvania
lead the fight to stop seizures, find a cure and overcome the
challenges caused by epilepsy; and
WHEREAS, The Epilepsy Association of Western and Central
Pennsylvania and the Epilepsy Foundation Eastern Pennsylvania
are dedicated to ensuring that residents of this Commonwealth
with epilepsy are able to participate in all of life's
experiences; and
WHEREAS, The Epilepsy Association of Western and Central
Pennsylvania and the Epilepsy Foundation Eastern Pennsylvania
have been serving the needs of residents of this Commonwealth
with epilepsy since 1972; and
WHEREAS, Misinformation and misconceptions regarding epilepsy
have a long history and are still prevalent throughout society
today; and
WHEREAS, Education and awareness programs are vital to combat
the stigma of epilepsy and improve the quality of life for
individuals with epilepsy; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize March
26, 2020, as "Epilepsy Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage
residents of this Commonwealth to wear the color purple on March
26, 2020, to raise awareness of epilepsy.
