A RESOLUTION
Recognizing October 19, 2019, as "National Period Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, "National Period Day" brings attention to period
poverty by demanding better accessibility of period products in
this Commonwealth and across the United States; and
WHEREAS, According to the Alliance for Period Supplies,
Period, Inc., No More Secrets Mind Body Spirit, Inc., and the
Red Box Project, nonprofits and advocacy groups that fight to
end period poverty throughout the country and worldwide, one in
four women struggle to afford period products due to a lack of
income; and
WHEREAS, According to a recent study of low-income women,
nearly two-thirds were unable to afford period products at some
point over the course of a year, and 21% of these women lacked
supplies on a monthly basis; and
WHEREAS, Thirty-four states still have a sales tax on period
products considering them nonessential items; and

WHEREAS, A stigma still exists around the topics of
menstruation and periods which has led to a lack of information
and open conversations on the existing need and struggle to
afford period products throughout the country; and
WHEREAS, Access to period products is a necessity for the
health and well-being of women; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize October
19, 2019, as "National Period Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
efforts of Alliance for Period Supplies, Period, Inc., No More
Secrets Mind Body Spirit, Inc., the Red Box Project and all
community organizations working to address period poverty; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage the
residents of this Commonwealth to support community
organizations and participate in period product drives to help
improve access to period products for women in the Commonwealth.
