A RESOLUTION
Designating October 29, 2019, as "Amusement Park Day" in
Pennsylvania to honor amusement parks and family theme parks
in this Commonwealth.
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is home to numerous amusement parks and
family theme parks that offer entertainment, attractions, rides
and events for the enjoyment of individuals and families; and
WHEREAS, Among the numerous amusement parks and family theme
parks in this Commonwealth that are worthy of recognition are
the following:
(1) Camelback Lodge and Aquatopia Indoor Waterpark, the
largest indoor water park on the East Coast, is located in
Pocono Township, Monroe County;
(2) Conneaut Lake Park in Crawford County was founded in
1892 as Exposition Park, a permanent fairground and
exposition for livestock, machinery and industrial products

from western Pennsylvania, and was renamed in 1920 to reflect
its nature as a summer resort amusement park;
(3) DelGrosso's Amusement Park in Tipton, Blair County,
a family-oriented amusement park purchased by the DelGrosso
family in 1946, was named "Bland's Park" until 2000;
(4) Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom in South Whitehall
Township, Lehigh County, traces its history back to 1860 when
Solomon Dorney built a trout hatchery and summer resort on
his estate outside Allentown;
(5) Dutch Wonderland in East Lampeter Township,
Lancaster County, opened in 1963, and its theme is "Kingdom
for Kids" because of its primary appeal to families with
young children;
(6) Great Wolf Lodge is an indoor water park resort that
opened in 2005 in the Pocono Mountain region of this
Commonwealth in Pocono Township, Monroe County;
(7) Hersheypark in Derry Township, Dauphin County,
founded in 1906 by Milton S. Hershey as a leisure park for
employees of the Hershey Chocolate Company, opened an Allan
Herschell carousel often referred to as the "Merry-Go-Round"
as its first ride in 1908 and now operates more than 70
rides, including 13 roller coasters;
(8) Kalahari Resort and Convention Center, an indoor
water park with an African theme, named after the Kalahari
Desert in southern Africa, opened in 2015 in Pocono Township,
Monroe County;
(9) Kennywood in West Mifflin, Allegheny County, opened
as a trolley park attraction at the end of the Monongahela
Street Railway in 1899;
(10) Knoebels Amusement Resort, opened in 1926, is a

family-owned and family-operated amusement park, picnic grove
and campground located in Cleveland and Franklin Townships,
Columbia County, and Ralpho Township, Northumberland County;
(11) Lakemont Park and the Island Waterpark in Altoona,
Blair County, housing the world's oldest surviving roller
coaster, opened in 1894 as a trolley park and subsequently
became an amusement park in 1899;
(12) Sesame Place, a children's theme park based on the
television program Sesame Street, opened in 1980 in
Middletown Township, Bucks County;
(13) Split Rock Resort Indoor Waterpark, also known as
the H20ooohh!! Indoor Family Water Park, is located in Kidder
Township, Carbon County; and
(14) Waldameer Park and Water World, at the base of
Presque Isle in Millcreek Township, Erie County, began as a
picnic area called Hoffman's Grove and was renamed
"Waldameer" after the Erie Electric Motor Company leased the
park in 1896;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate October
29, 2019, as "Amusement Park Day" in Pennsylvania to honor
amusement parks and family theme parks in this Commonwealth; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge individuals
and families to take the opportunity to visit the numerous
amusement parks and family theme parks across this Commonwealth.
