A RESOLUTION
Designating October 28, 2019, as "Steve Blass Day" in
Pennsylvania to celebrate the Pittsburgh Pirates icon.
WHEREAS, A former batboy for an Interstate League
semiprofessional team in his hometown of Canaan, Connecticut,
Steve Blass expressed his career goal of becoming a major league
pitcher in his freshman year at Housatonic Valley Regional High
School; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Blass's career arc in professional baseball
began when he signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates just after high
school graduation in 1960; and
WHEREAS, Developing his talents and sustaining excitement for
the sport, Mr. Blass has been a fixture at Forbes Field, Three
Rivers Stadium and PNC Park since his major league debut in
1964; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Blass ranks 17th on the Pittsburgh Pirate's all-
time wins list, 7th in strikeouts and 16th in shutouts; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Blass was on the mound October 17, 1971, when
the Pittsburgh Pirates ended the season with a championship win
during World Series Game 7, Pittsburgh Pirates at Baltimore
Orioles; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Blass is the last National League pitcher to
have thrown a complete game in Game 7 of a World Series; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Blass displayed more of his natural talents, for
recall and storytelling, and met another significant career goal
in his work with the Pittsburgh Pirates' broadcast team; and
WHEREAS, Stepping away from the broadcast booth in September
2019 after 34 seasons, Mr. Blass is set to represent the
Pittsburgh Pirates as an ambassador in the 2020 season; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives extends best wishes as
Mr. Blass embarks on new paths with his family and his cherished
Pittsburgh Pirates fans; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate October
28, 2019, as "Steve Blass Day" in Pennsylvania to celebrate the
Pittsburgh Pirates icon.
