A RESOLUTION
Urging the Congress of the United States to direct the National
Institutes of Health to conduct a comprehensive study on the
causes of Ewing sarcoma.
WHEREAS, Ewing sarcoma is a cancerous tumor that occurs in
bones or soft tissue, such as cartilage or nerves; and
WHEREAS, Ewing sarcoma is the second most common primary bone
tumor in children and accounts for approximately 1% of all
childhood cancer diagnoses; and
WHEREAS, There are several types of Ewing sarcoma, including
Ewing sarcoma of bone, extraosseous Ewing sarcoma, peripheral
primitive neuroectodermal tumor and Askin tumor; and
WHEREAS, It is estimated that 200 children are diagnosed with
one of these types of tumors each year in the United States; and
WHEREAS, From 2008 to 2017, there were 306 diagnosed Ewing's
Family of Tumors cases in this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Symptoms of Ewing sarcoma may include pain in the
bone where the tumor is located, swelling in the area of the

tumor and tenderness to touch, fever, weak bones and decreased
motor skills; and
WHEREAS, Ewing sarcoma is most common in people who are
between 10 and 20 years of age, occurs slightly more often in
males than in females and is more common among Caucasians than
other ethnic groups; and
WHEREAS, The cause of Ewing sarcoma is unknown and although
Ewing sarcoma arises from specific types of cells, it does not
appear to be inherited; and
WHEREAS, As part of its mission statement, the National
Institutes of Health has a goal to foster fundamental creative
discoveries and innovative research strategies as a basis for
protecting and improving the health of our nation and develop,
maintain and renew scientific human and physical resources that
will ensure our nation's capability to prevent disease;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania urge the Congress of the United
States to direct the National Institutes of Health to conduct a
comprehensive study on the causes of Ewing sarcoma; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to
the Secretary of the United States Department of Health and
Human Services, Director of the National Institutes of Health,
Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and
each member of Congress from Pennsylvania.
