A RESOLUTION
Remembering Dr. Morton Coleman, who cultivated consensus and
opportunity for the lasting benefit of the University of
Pittsburgh community and his fellow Pittsburgh residents.
WHEREAS, Dr. Morton Coleman, familiarly known as Moe, died on
January 28, 2019, at 86 years of age; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Coleman translated his inclinations, experiences
and data-driven findings into shaping stable communities and
spurring social engagement; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Coleman consistently used whatever platform he
had to foster communication among groups, always searching for
common ground and incremental progress that could help people;
and
WHEREAS, Dr. Coleman attended Pittsburgh public schools and
earned his undergraduate degree and advanced degrees in social
work and political science from the University of Pittsburgh;
and
WHEREAS, Deriving insights from his early work, and the

people who influenced his work, as a community organizer at the
Anna B. Heldman and Kingsley settlement houses, Dr. Coleman was
a force behind local and regional gains in fair housing and
urban renewal; and
WHEREAS, As an aide in the administration of Mayor Joseph
Barr, Dr. Coleman further dedicated his energies to social
change and public policy; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Coleman advised Henry Ford II on urban issues in
Detroit; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Coleman was the founding director of the
Institute of Politics at the University of Pittsburgh,
established in 1989; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Coleman maintained his connections and continued
his service to the institute as director emeritus and advisor;
and
WHEREAS, The institute presents its annual Coleman Award to a
community leader who has improved the quality of life in
southwestern Pennsylvania in keeping with Dr. Coleman's notable
and sometimes unheralded acts; and
WHEREAS, At the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Coleman also
held joint appointments with the Graduate School of Public and
International Affairs and the Urban Studies program and
was a professor and professor emeritus at the School of Social
Work; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives respectfully
acknowledges Dr. Coleman's advocacy for underserved and
underrepresented families and neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives expresses its thanks
for the gift of Dr. Coleman's guidance and his example for
generations of students and changemakers; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives remember Dr.
Morton Coleman, who cultivated consensus and opportunity for the
lasting benefit of the University of Pittsburgh community and
his fellow Pittsburgh residents; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
Greta G. Coleman in care of the Institute of Politics through
the Office of Institutional Advancement, University of
Pittsburgh, 128 North Craig Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15260.
